“ Nice atmosphere .; good food; large menu to choose from plus they make pizza which is really good and homemade there. Plus lots of pies.... ”
“ I absolutely love this restaurant! Everything was great! The food was delicious, the staff was wonderful and we never had to ask for anything! The owner was super nice and even the patrons! I felt like I was thrown back into a time where people were just different, kind, friendly and genuine. Such a down home family feeling. I felt like I was home and I can't wait to go back! ”
“ Explored another small town restaurant tonight. The ambiance seemed very 1980's, extremely small restroom as well. Seated pretty quickly for a Friday night. The place was filled. Large menu with typical cafe style food. We ordered the beer nuggets. I wasn't really impressed with the sauce, a little bland or the nuggets. They seemed a little small and not as puffed up compared to the really good ones. For the main, I had the chicken salad, kiddo had the Mickey Mouse pancake and our friend had the fish fry. Everything came out at the same time. Large enough portions. Chicken salad was pretty tasty. Reported that both the pancake and fish were as well. Overall not bad, but not my favorite either. ”
“ I recently moved to the area and this was one of the first places I tried, the quality of the food good its nothing spectacular but it's definitely better than what Im used to with some of the places near by but what really made this place amazing for me was the service and ambience the employees offer each and every customer when you walk through the door its almost as if you're arriving at your house getting ready to enjoy a nice home cooked meal. ”
“ I've lived in the area for 18+ years and KFR is a weekly treat. Whether it's breakfast on the weekend, a quick lunch during the week or the Friday fish fry, you can't go wrong with the daily specials or the regular menu items. Service is warm and friendly, the place has gone through a remodel and refresh recently but still retains that warm small town friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend ”

“ In the "before times," people were just nicer. Regardless of race, religion, political bent, people, in general, were just more well-behaved. Friendlier, cordial, helpful. At least that's what I think. Last Saturday I ran into a little bit of the "before times" when I stopped in a small Illinois town to get some food to go from the local diner. Here's a little bit of what I found out about Kirkland. And it has nothing to do with Costco. Originally the land of the Pottawatomie Indians, a peaceful tribe, they grew rice and corn and refined maple sugar. They were removed in 1836 as part of one of the US gov't "treaties" and not long after a Mr. William Kirk built a log cabin and began acquiring land, which totaled 1500 acres by 1886. He donated some land to the railroad on the condition they'd make the little burg a stop, they did, and it worked to the town's advantage, as by law, sheep traveling to slaughter in Chicago could spend no more than 36 hours on the train without a break, and that was the exact distance from Omaha, where many herds would come from. They were unloaded at Kirkland, watered, fed, and sheared before continuing on. Population peaked ten years ago at 1744, but that has affected the bustle of the village. One doesn't see the empty storefronts like in most small Midwest towns. There are several bars and restaurants, a grocer, building supplies, a gas station, a couple of churches, a bank, and then there is the Kirkland Family Restaurant. They are open seven days for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and have a very extensive menu (posted below) for a small operation. Daily specials, too. But I was talking about the "before times" people, wasn't I? And that's what I found at this small town eatery, friendly greetings from other customers, and a single waitress/server that went above and beyond the call to serve. We placed an order to go (I'm still not comfortable with public spaces yet, March 2021) and I had the fried fish and fries, with a side of creamy slaw. Our other selection was the fried shrimp, which also included fries, and the side choice was cottage cheese. Fresh, soft dinner rolls were included. They had a lot of potato and side choices, again, interesting for a small operation. Our food was prepared quickly and correctly, fried to perfection, and very tasty. Again, the server wanted to make sure we were prepared to eat our meal on the go and kept asking/suggesting compliments to our order, like plastic cutlery, ample napkins, butter pats, other sauces. She made sure we were covered. It was a great experience, and I can wait to return for a leisurely Saturday morning breakfast. You can bet I'll go for chicken fried steak and a mess o eggs and taters. BTW, everything on the menu is very, very, reasonably priced. ”
“ So just so you know I'm rating this restaurant according to their breakfast only. I have never eaten lunch or dinner here, but when we lived in IL we would drive over 30 min to have our most favorite breakfast ever! I usually could get 2, sometimes 3 (depending on how hungry I was or should I say how much self control I had LOL) meals out of my one. I always order the veggie skillet, American cheese and two eggs over medium. The veggies are green bell pepper, onion, mushroom and tomatoes. They put the sautéed veggies over browned hash browns then a good amount of American cheese slices. The eggs sit on top of it all. It served on a platter so it's a hefty portion to eat at one sitting. But it is soooo incredibly good when I cut into the egg and the yolk runs out and down into all the other yummy ingredients. It comes with a choice of toast ( and they have cinnamon raisin and wheat as part on the choices, yum!). Hubby cannot find an omelette that can beat this country place anywhere. The omelettes are h ”
“ The KFR. Always a favorite. Being from the small town, my favorites were always the chicken strip dinner which comes with soup and potato. They have the best breakfast- no matter what you order. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal there. We know the waitress Diane, and she is such a sweet woman. Wether you are a townie or just stopping by, the KFR is a must! ”
